Random Thoughts......

Running spills over into the real world at some unexpected times.   I volunteered to help my son's class with a school project recently.  He's getting to the age where parents can be a huge source of embarrassment, but thankfully, he's not quite there yet.  As I was saying goodnight to him the night before I was to go into his classroom, he asked me what I was planning on wearing.   I wasn't sure and asked if he had any guidance for me.   He asked me to wear the race shirt from my marathon....not the one that says Marathon AND Half Marathon, but the one that just says  "Marathon".  I was sooooo touched by this.  Sure, he's only 10, but it still feels pretty nice to know he's proud of me.

I've been able to get to the gym on a pretty regular basis lately and I'm starting to feel the effects of it.   I'm kind of inspired lately to get in better shape, and that inspiration is keeping me motivated.  It's getting me out running more often, at a harder effort level, and it's getting me to the gym more often for non running exercise.  I've been enjoying the freedom of running when and where I want at whatever effort level suits my fancy at the moment.  I do have a few goals that I'm training for now, so some of that freedom will have to be sacrificed for efficiency, but I think it's going to be an easy adjustment to make.  I have some strong motivation to make some things happen, so I'm expecting good results.  My weight has already started to drop.  I'd like to drop about 10 pounds in the next month or so so I can peak at just the right time, physically and mentally.

I know this post is kind of  lame, but I'm trying to get this going again.   Most of the significant issues in my life at the moment are of too personal a nature to blog about.  I also know that no matter how eloquent I manage to be, some of my thoughts have already been expressed by people much more skilled at those expressions than I will ever hope to be.  Tonight I leave you with a little Robert Frost.

Out through the fields and the woods
And over the walls I have wended;
I have climbed the hills of view
And looked at the world, and descended;
I have come by the highway home,
And lo, it is ended.

The leaves are all dead on the ground,
Save those that the oak is keeping
To ravel them one by one
And let them go scraping and creeping
Out over the crusted snow,
When others are sleeping.

And the dead leaves lie huddled and still,
No longer blown hither and thither;
The last lone aster is gone;
The flowers of the witch hazel wither;
The heart is still aching to seek,
But the feet question "Whither?"

Ah, when to the heart of man
Was it ever less than a treason
To go with the drift of things,
To yield with a grace to reason,
And bow and accept the end
Of a love or a season?

  1. I forgot all about this poem. Robert Frost is one of my favorite poets. Love Seamus Heaney too. Thanks for posting this!
